Hanen Programmes

Jessica is qualified to undertake the following Hanen programmes with families:
- 'It takes two to talk' ........... a programme for parents of children with delayed language skills. It has been designed for parents with young children, birth to 5 years, who have been identified with language delays. Parents learn practical strategies to help their child learn language naturally throughout their day together.
- 'Target Word' ...........a programme for parents of children who are late talkers. Specifically designed for parents of children who are under the age of 30 months who are using few words or not combining words into short phrases. These children typically have good understanding, play and turn-taking skills, but limited vocabularies. Parents learn strategies that will increase children's use of words during everyday activities.
- 'More than words' ....... is designed for parents of children aged 5 and under who have social interaction difficulties, or children who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. This programme provides parents with the tools, strategies and support they need to help the child reach their full communicative potential by improving social skills, ability to engage in 'back-and-forth' interactions and improved understanding of language.
- 'Talkability' ...... is a programme for parents of verbal children on the autistic spectrum, typically those who are 'high functioning' or who have a diagnosis of 'Asperger Syndrome'. Specifically designed for parents of children aged 3-7 years with social communication difficulties, it teaches parents practical ways to help their child to learn people skills, including how to 'tune-in' to others, consider other points of view and have empathy, for successful conversations and for making friends.
The above programmes typically consist of 5-8 taught sessions, each lasting beween 2 -2.5 hours and a further 3-4 video sessions depending on the programme undertaken. Taught sessions generally take place every 3-4 weeks but can be spaced further apart if required. Hanen programmes are very effective but do require commitment from the parents to conduct the principles taught in the sessions. The child is not present during the taught sessions but attends for the video sessions.
