COGMED
Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence based programme for improving working memory. It is a computer-based solution for improving attention and increasing working memory capacity over a five week training period.
Jessica is a licensed Cogmed practitioner. Cogmed was developed in Sweden in 1999 and is now used world-wide to improve the working memory of pre-school, school-aged children and adults. It is used for children and adults with attention difficulties, auditory processing problems and learning difficulties.
A good working memory is essential for effective learning. It is the part of memory which allows us to store whilst working on information at the same time - the skill you put into practise for instance if you were asked to add 4 numbers together or following instructions in the classroom or workplace. It is necessary for staying focussed on a task, blocking out distractions and keeping you upated and aware about what is going on around you. We use working memory constantly in our daily lives, helping us to perform efficiently and effectively in academic, professional and social settings.
Working memory is related to performance in reading (Gathercole and Pickering 2000), mathematics (Geary et al 2004) and academic performance (Gathercole et al 2004). 83% of children with defecits in working memory show difficulties in reading, maths and science at primary and secondary levels (Gathercole et al 2004).
The COGMED programme involves:
- Assessment of memory
- Provision of a unique 'log-in' code to access the online memory training programme.
- Weekly supervision during the 25 session programme to check progress and areas of difficulty.
This also includes a weekly phone call to review the week's progress and maintain motivation.
- Re-assessment of memory following the programme.
- A six month follow-up appointment.
